Hair Colour Product Cost Tracking

Track hair colour product cost with every formula

TintLedger calculates direct product cost from the quantities entered in a formula and the saved unit cost of each Backbar product.

Save the formula to a client, keep its recorded cost values in history, and start the next visit from the mix you used before.

Fictional example only. Product names and prices are illustrative, not typical.

Why manual product costing gets hard

Direct product cost is straightforward in principle, but an appointment can combine changing prices, several products and quantities recorded in different units.

Package prices change

The unit cost you remember from an earlier order may no longer match the package in front of you.

One service can use several products

Colour, developer, toner and treatments can each add a separate line to the bowl cost.

Appointment-time arithmetic gets in the way

Working through several price-and-quantity calculations while serving a client is inconvenient and leaves room for simple mistakes.

Past cost is hard to reconstruct

Without a saved record, it can be difficult to recover the products, quantities and recorded costs used in an earlier formula.

From package price to direct product cost

This is the connected paid-product flow. The free calculator provides a separate one-off calculation without saving products or formulas.

  1. Save package price and size

Enter purchase price and container size for a priced Backbar product.

  2. Derive the unit cost

TintLedger works out and saves the price per unit.

  3. Enter the amount used

Record the quantity measured for that product in the formula.

  4. Calculate each product line

The recorded quantity is costed from its saved unit-cost value.

  5. Sum the direct product cost

The rounded product-line costs are added into one direct product-cost total.

  6. Save the cost with the formula

Recorded unit costs and line costs stay with the saved formula history.

For the complete formula, conversions and rounding sequence, read the product-cost calculation guide.

One connected formula flow

Product price, quantity, cost and client history stay connected without turning TintLedger into a full salon operating system.

  1. Backbar product
  2. Formula line item
  3. Direct product cost
  4. Saved client formula
  5. Formula history

Products you can record in a formula

A formula can include the products you actually use across the colour service. These examples are not an exhaustive catalogue or a manufacturer endorsement.

  • Permanent colour
  • Developer
  • Toner or gloss
  • Lightener
  • Bond treatment
  • Additional treatment or consumable

Units stay explicit

Inside the authenticated product, formula lines record quantities in supported units, including grams, ounces, millilitres and count units where appropriate.

Mass

Recorded as a weight unit.

Volume

Recorded as a volume unit.

  • Mass and volume are distinct.
  • TintLedger does not infer product density.
  • No Bluetooth scale or proprietary hardware is required.
  • Enter the amount measured with your normal salon tools.
  • Direct product cost is not profit. Labour, rent, tax, payment fees and other overhead remain separate.

Saved cost stays understandable

Saved formula history preserves the recorded cost snapshot. It is not automatically rewritten when a Backbar price changes later.

Historical records keep the unit costs and line costs recorded with that formula. A revised Backbar price is used in future costing when you select that product afresh; it does not silently change prior formula history.

Reuse begins with the saved formula

Mix this again creates a new draft with the saved products, quantities and recorded unit-cost snapshots. It does not automatically refresh those values from the current Backbar price.

Recommended charge has clear limits

TintLedger can provide a recommended-charge estimate when a supported pricing mode is configured and the required inputs are present. It is based on the pricing mode and inputs you configure, such as time and direct product cost.

  • It is an estimate.
  • It is not a payment record.
  • It is not a profit guarantee.
  • Product Cost Only does not itself return a recommended charge.

What TintLedger does not do

TintLedger stays focused on formula memory, direct product cost and client recall for independent colourists.

  • No automatic density conversion
  • No automatic historical repricing
  • No guaranteed profit
  • No tax calculation claim
  • No chemistry or shade advice
  • No booking or POS replacement
  • No payroll or accounting replacement
  • No full inventory-management claim

Connect product cost to the formula you save

Start with one priced Backbar product, record a real formula, and keep its direct product cost ready for the next client visit.
