How to calculate hair colour product cost

To calculate direct hair colour product cost, convert package size and amount used to the same mass or volume base unit. Multiply the package price by the normalised amount used, divide by the normalised package size, round each product line to cents, then add the rounded line costs.

Definitions used in the calculation

These terms keep purchase information, measured usage and displayed money separate.

Package price
The non-negative amount paid for the stated package size, in the selected currency.
Package size
The positive quantity contained in the package.
Amount used
The non-negative quantity used in the colour service.
Package unit
The mass or volume unit that applies to the package size.
Usage unit
The mass or volume unit that applies to the amount used.
Exact unit cost
Package price divided by normalised package size. It stays unrounded for calculation.
Exact line cost
Package price multiplied by normalised amount used, divided by normalised package size.
Displayed line cost
The exact line cost rounded half-up once to two currency decimal places.
Total direct product cost
The sum of the already-rounded product-line cents.
Optional service price
Optional context entered in the same currency. It is not a TintLedger price recommendation.
Product-cost percentage
Rounded direct product cost divided by a positive service price, expressed as a percentage.

Optional context only: against an A$100.00 service price, the product-cost percentage is 16.9% and the amount remaining after direct product cost is A$83.12. This subtracts direct product cost only. Labour, overhead, tax, fees and other costs are not deducted. The amount remaining is not profit.

Supported units and exact conversions

Normalise mass to grams and volume to millilitres. Use the visible label US fl oz; an ambiguous generic fl oz is not supported.

Why mass and volume cannot be mixed

Grams and kilograms measure mass. Millilitres and litres measure volume. Converting between them requires the density of the specific product, and TintLedger does not infer density. Keep each product row entirely within mass or entirely within volume.

Round product lines before adding the total

  1. Keep the exact unit cost unrounded.
  2. Calculate the exact product line from the normalised quantities.
  3. Round each exact line half-up once to cents.
  4. Add the already-rounded line cents for total direct product cost.

Exact half cent

A$0.005A$0.01

A discarded half cent rounds upward, not to the nearest even cent.

Why line-first rounding matters

Three exact lines of 0.004, 0.004, 0.004 each display as A$0.00, A$0.00, A$0.00. Their calculator total is A$0.00.

Combining the raw amount first gives A$0.012, which would round once to A$0.01. TintLedger does not use that raw-total method.

Common mistakes

  • Reversing the formula and dividing the amount used by package price.
  • Mixing mass and volume units in one product line.
  • Using a package size of zero.
  • Using an outdated package price.
  • Rounding the exact unit cost before calculating the product line.
  • Adding raw line values and rounding only once at the end.
  • Assuming binary floating-point values represent decimal money exactly.
  • Leaving out developer, toner, gloss or treatment products that were used.
  • Assuming product density to convert between mass and volume.
  • Treating direct product cost as profit.
