Transparent methodology

How measured waste cost is calculated

All arithmetic uses decimal-safe unit conversion and explicit half-up money rounding.

1. Measured waste

waste = prepared − used, or the remaining quantity entered directly. Waste must stay between zero and the prepared amount.

2. Waste percentage

waste ÷ prepared × 100. This describes the measured remainder, not whether it could have been avoided.

3. Direct waste cost

Single-product mode multiplies measured waste by package unit cost. Multi-component mode values the prepared components, then applies the measured mixture fraction.

4. Annual and scenario views

Per-service cost is multiplied by the entered service frequency and working periods. A selected reduction percentage shows an estimated difference, not guaranteed savings.

Single product and mixed formula

These examples explain the method; they are not industry benchmarks or recommended quantities.

Single-product example

A fictional colour package costs A$24 for 100 g. A stylist prepares 60 g and measures 10 g remaining.

Waste percentage
10 ÷ 60 = 16.7%
Waste cost
A$24 ÷ 100 × 10 = A$2.40

Multi-component example

A fictional prepared formula costs A$15.00. A homogeneous 120 g mixture has 12 g remaining.

Waste fraction
12 ÷ 120 = 10.0%
Waste cost
A$15.00 × 10% = A$1.50

This assumes the remaining mixture contains components in the same proportions as the prepared formula.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Package prices represent direct product cost only; labour, overhead, tax, fees and other costs are excluded.
  • Mass converts only to mass and volume only to volume. No density or chemistry assumption converts between them.
  • Single-product package equivalents divide annual measured waste by the entered package quantity. Multi-component package equivalents are not shown.
  • Monthly cost is an annual average divided by 12, not a claim that every month is identical.
  • Reduction scenarios do not prescribe a working formula quantity and are not guaranteed savings.

This result values the measured remaining product using the package prices entered. It does not determine whether all of the remainder was avoidable.

If similar measured remainder occurs repeatedly, consider recording prepared and remaining quantities across several visits before changing your working formula quantity.

Does this calculator decide whether the remainder was avoidable?

No. It values the quantity you measured using the package prices entered. Appointment conditions, application needs and professional judgement can all affect why product remained.

Why does multi-component mode use one mixture percentage?

The estimate assumes the remaining mixture contains every component in the same proportions as the prepared formula. If the remainder is not homogeneous, the monetary estimate may not represent its actual composition.

Does TintLedger currently save or track waste?
